Community action

Making good ideas happen locally.

I have a practical, detailed knowledge of developing community-based projects - everything from community gardens to grassroots events and collective activism.

I'm interested in how projects like these can nurture our sense of active citizenship, bring people together across all kinds of divides, and help us to build connected, vibrant places. I'm always keen to be part of projects that help inspire these kinds of activities at scale, or that advocate for the conditions they need to thrive. I'm especially to work on projects rooted in queer, feminist or social justice politics.

Some community action projects I've been involved in:

  • Fun Palaces: I'm a longstanding Fun Palaces Maker and Ambassador, and am delighted to be working with them 2025-2028 on the development of a new learning network.

  • Linlithgow's Canal Trail: Partnership with Linlithgow Community Development Trust and Sustrans ArtRoots to create a participatory nature trail.

  • This Could Be A Garden: Protest installation designed to to prompt discussion about the potential of this site, and to re-ignite conversation about the role it could play in our community.

  • The Creative Hustle: An ongoing research project to collate and share frank information on the realities of how creative practitioners make a financially sustainable living.

  • The Walkbook, Recipes for walking & wellbeing: Exploring everyday mechanisms for connecting with our neighbours.

  • In 2017, I founded Stirling Soup, a community-led crowdfunding event that was shortlisted for a Scottish Charity Award.

What people say:

"Working with Kathryn is always fantastic. She listens to our brief and responds with inspiring and energetic talks which are perfectly suited to our audiences. A complete professional we are consistently impressed with her work with us. We look forward to continuing to work with Kathryn in the future".

Mo Odling,  Eden Project Communities

"Kathryn managed to quickly and, seemingly effortlessly, pull together a fantastic group of volunteers and businesses to create a democratic community fundraising movement in Stirling. Kathryn's can do attitude and bright, friendly personality are infectious. It was a true pleasure to volunteer for her. She has inspired me to go on and try new things that I probably would never have done if I hadn't known her".
